Las Vegas magician Jan Rouven ‘next Siegfried and Roy’
by Nicole Lucht
When you step inside the intimate Starlite Theater at the Riviera on the Las Vegas Strip, little do you know the charismatic Jan Rouven performing death-defying stunts on stage could very well be the next Siegfried and Roy.

And not only because they have the home country of Germany in common.

Rouven, who first saw the famed illusionists on stage when visiting Vegas as a 16-year-old, is noted for his creativity and charm, and his ambition to create bigger and better illusions for his show.

Tony Hassini, head of the International Magicians Society, the largest organization of its kind with 42,000 members, recently presented Rouven with the Illusionist of the Year Merlin Award, the society’s greatest honor to a practicing magician.

He said that when selecting the magician to receive the award, his organization looks for originality above all else.

“I suspect that Jan Rouven will be the next Siegfried and Roy,” said Hassini, 73 years old and a retired magician. “He has charisma, people take a liking to him. Mark my words, he will probably be the next big name in Vegas for many years to come.”

Siegfried and Roy have received the same Merlin award, as have other Vegas headliners David Copperfield and Criss Angel.

“This is a great honor,” Rouven said. “This is the organization that gave Siegfried and Roy the Magicians of the Century award that they always had on their billboard. It’s a big thing for me.”

This year, Rouven added an illusion in his show that was gifted to him by Siegfried Fischbacher. The retired magician worked with Rouven, helping him develop the duo’s “Origami” act as his own. In the act, one of Rouven’s assistants is folded up, much like the centuries-old paper art.

“It was a big honor,” Rouven said. “(“Origami”) is out of their museum and they gave it to me, so it’s a little tribute to Siegfried and Roy. People love it. They mention it often. When I ask after the show, what was your favorite act? They say, that one from Siegfried and Roy.”

Tony Hassini presents Jan Rouven with the Illusionist of the Year Merlin Award at the Riviera in Las Vegas.

For his other acts, Rouven said he is inspired by films, classic magic books — some as old as 150 years – and audience suggestions after the show when he greets them outside the theater.

“I see myself as an entertainer who uses magic to entertain,” he said. “And Celine Dion, she is an entertainer and she uses singing to entertain. That’s also an important part. It’s not just the illusions. It has to be an entertaining show. But usually, when I work on new acts, I ask people after the show, what would you like to see? And then they say something that is not possible, and then I have to come up with an illusion with a solution to solve it.”

His show includes modern music and is suitable for all ages.

“I like to show people new things they never have seen before,” Rouven said. “Magic always goes back to some classical secrets and methods, but I try everything I have presented with a new switch to it.”

Illusions starring Jan Rouven performs at 7 p.m. Saturday – Thursday at the Riviera. Tickets are priced from $54.90.

The Quad in Las Vegas is getting a new name and a $223 million facelift
by Renee LiButti
Caesars Entertainment announced that $223 million in renovations along with a complete rebranding are slated for The Quad.

On Oct. 30, 2014, the property will officially become The LINQ Hotel & Casino.

The Quad, which is located near the heart of the Las Vegas Strip, has actually been undergoing a major makeover. Formerly known as the Imperial Palace, the hotel was renamed in December 2012. It’s been a hub of construction activity ever since.

This second rebranding, however, seems a natural transition to better align it with The LINQ, an open-air, pedestrian-only district situated along the corridor between The Quad and Flamingo. Also owned by Caesars Entertainment, this $550 million project debuted in phases beginning in late December 2013. Packed with numerous dining, drinking, retail and concert venues, it’s anchored by the 550-foot-tall High Roller observation wheel.

According to Tariq Shaukat, executive vice president and chief marketing officer of Caesars Entertainment, The LINQ Hotel & Casino will provide guests with a “connected environment,” one that puts “all the great restaurants, shops and experiences available at The LINQ promenade right at their fingertips.”

A huge part of the multimillion-dollar plan to overhaul The Quad includes room renovations. The LINQ Hotel & Casino will house 2,256 accommodations. Standard rooms will feature contemporary designs with one of three accent wall murals that offer stylized interpretations of vintage Vegas. Floor-to-ceiling windows will showcase views of the High Roller, the Strip or the surrounding city. In addition, guests will enjoy amenities like pillow-top mattresses, iPod docking stations with speakers, 47-inch flat-screen TVs, marble bathroom countertops and rain shower heads. Wireless internet access will also be available in the rooms and all of the resort’s common areas.

“The LINQ Hotel & Casino will immerse guests into social lifestyle experiences through provocative yet approachable modern offerings,” said Bob Morse, president of hospitality of Caesars Entertainment. “This new hotel is bold, graphic, social and digital with dynamic community spaces designed for the socially engaged traveler.”

For example, the arrival experience at The LINQ Hotel & Casino will involve an automated check-in process, and there will be a concierge touch-screen option to make reservations for restaurants or book tickets to shows and concerts.

Besides standard rooms, The LINQ Hotel & Casino will have 204 suites along with 29 “cabana suites.” Each cabana suite will boast a private patio with a daybed as well as easy access to the resort’s remodeled pool deck.

To be unveiled in spring 2015, this deck will be comprised of two separate pool experiences. The first one will be ideal for swimming and sunbathing, while the second one will provide a dayclub vibe complete with a live DJ.

Also in spring, The LINQ Hotel & Casino will introduce a new lobby bar called the Living Room. A special menu will allow you to reserve your favorite board games to either play there or bring up to your room. Plus, there will be a new coffee shop, new retail options and a new 15,000-square-foot spa and fitness center.

Last but not least, The LINQ Hotel & Casino will debut its Vortex Roof Deck on the property’s fifth floor. This 21,000-square-foot attraction will not only be eye-catching, but it will also be able to host events such as concerts, fashion shows and weddings – all while providing remarkable views of the Strip.

Chuck Rounds’ Las Vegas Entertainment News

A monthly Las Vegas Entertainment Newsletter
July 2014

We are now past the summer solstice and moving into the long and hot month of July…traditionally the hottest month in Las Vegas, and on July 1st, the temperature is schedule to be in the 110 degree mark. Woo Hoo!

And yes, it will be hot enough to fry an egg on the sidewalk. I’m already braced for that “breaking news story.” The second most seen news story is the thermometer in the car shot…showing yes, it does get hotter in the car when you let it sit in the sun. Last year, Death Valley had such a problem with people frying eggs on their sidewalks, that it is now illegal. But seriously, the pavement is hot. You may have to rethink when and how you walk your dogs. If the pavement is too hot for you to walk on with your bare feet…then your dog will be burning the pads on its paws.

There are some essentials that you will need in order to cope with the heat in the desert… sunscreen! Water—stay hydrated, (and try putting fruit in your water (oranges, raspberries, etc) to help with electrolytes,) and be sure to use lotion, and limit your time in the sun. The best place to be is inside a casino or a showroom. When the tourists are not inside; they’ll be hanging out on the Strip suffering from heat exhaustion, or by the pool getting sun burnt. It’s also a great time to really enjoy the summer nights.

With that out of the way, let’s talk about fun stuff…the first week of July is packed with stuff, but will be dominated by two events; the Fourth of July, and the UFC Fight week.

Our Independence Day is bigger and better here than just about anywhere else in the country. Station Casinos will be hosting fireworks all over the valley, while Caesars Entertainment will cover the Strip, with Mandalay Bay covering the South Strip. The entire valley is going to part of this celebration. Over a quarter of a million people are expected to be visiting here on the fourth, and if you are anywhere near, or in view of, the Strip you are in for an amazing fireworks display. There are events planned all over the city, and it will be almost impossible to miss. I would suggest seeking high ground…and watching the multiple displays that go out across the city.

The purchase of “safe and sane” fireworks is legal in Clark County, though the local fire departments are hoping that few indulge themselves. There has been no trace of rain for over four months, the lakes are below the drought level, and we’ve had less than one-third of an inch of rain for the entire year. Needless to say, the fire alerts are on an all time high—and there is a lot of fuel out there. Wildfires are the plague of the southwest and no one wants the situation to be worsened by additional fires caused by fireworks. “Unsafe and Insane” fireworks are available outside of the county, and are supposed to be illegal in Clark County, but they are seen going off all over the city. The Fourth is the only holiday that makes me nervous…there are just too many accidents. Do everyone and yourself a favor—watch one of the planned displays.

All of that being said…mine is one of those neighborhoods that have a block party, and I love it. I bring out the grill and everyone supplies drinks and food…it’s the one time of the year that we all get together, and it brings us all closer. It’s nice to know your neighbors. It’s a great way to spend the 4th of July holiday. And of course in the evening, one of the neighbors launches all of the fireworks—which is also why I like being home on the fourth, I love the camaraderie, and I’m there just in case…
